The WoodMaxx MX-8600 is a robust compact PTO driven wood chipper with a self-contained hydrostatic auto-feed system that features an impressive 8″ x 6″ infeed opening. This chipper weighs 550 lbs. with a steel flywheel. It was specifically designed for use on smaller sub compact tractors with as little as 15 hp. at the PTO such as BX series Kubotas, John Deere 1000 series, New Holland, Massy Ferguson GC series, Mahindra Max series, and more; although this machine can handle tractors of 50 plus hp. The hydraulic infeed motor is powered by the chipper’s self-contained hydrostatic pump and reservoir. Four (4) high quality (A8 tool steel) made in the USA knives are standard equipment on our MX-8600 and MX-9900 chippers. The design of the WoodMaxx MX-series chipper is so unique and innovative that it is now patented.
WoodMaxx patented MX-Series wood chippers are proudly designed, engineered and manufactured in the USA at our Akron, NY facility. With a multi-million-dollar investment in the latest high-tech fabricating equipment to increase production, WoodMaxx MX-Series wood chippers are in high demand.
POW-R-TORQ™️️ is a trademarked and patented infeed system. This system is a combination of our patented hydrostatic pump motor, specially designed infeed roller, nitrogen filled gas springs, automatic belt tension device and American made A8 tool steel knives. Combined, these features create the most powerful, efficient and speed variable infeed system available on ANY wood chipper on the market today.
Hydrostatic drive systems have several differences and benefits over traditional hydraulic drive systems. Hydrostatic pumps exhibit variable displacement without the need for external devices such as flow control and flow diverter (proportioning) valves. This reduces the number of fittings, hoses, and amount of oil needed. Unlike hydraulic systems requiring several gallons of oil, our hydrostatic system only needs 2 quarts of motor oil (Why can’t I use synthetic oil in my chipper? Click here to find out) Hydrostatic technology has been around for decades and is used in some of the highest demanding and harshest mobile applications such bulldozers, trains, excavators, skid steers, and even ride on lawn mowers. Hydrostatic systems are very efficient, generate minimal heat, and are extremely precise, allowing for smooth infeed speed control from 1 ft./min to a full 75 ft./min. with full power through the entire speed range. Take a look below for more information on each of these key POW-R-TORQ™️️ features or watch a short video here.
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 requires a tractor with a category 1 or 2 three-point hitch and at least 15 HP at the PTO. Chipping capacity is directly related to horsepower and torque, therefore with 15 HP you can expect to chip 4″ hard wood and 6″ soft wood. With 50+ HP you can expect to chip any material up to 6″ in diameter with no trouble.
A WoodMaxx patented design. Everyone knows what happens to the branches when they reach the flywheel knives of the wood chipper, but getting the material to pull into the wood chippers effectively and quickly is the trick. Many factors must be considered when designing an effective infeed roller system: the overall diameter, knife spacing, tooth angle, type of steel, hardness, down pressure and infeed speed. After countless hours of research and development on the infeed system, we have developed a large diameter (8″) octagonal shaped infeed roller. This innovative design allows the chisel shaped teeth of the roller to grab and climb up and over the branches to easily bite in and effectively pull the material into the wood chipper flywheel at speeds up to 75 ft./min. In short, the larger the roller, the easier it rolls over the material. The smaller the roller, the more likely it is to slip and spin on the branches. Similar to how the small wheels of a shopping cart stop when contacting a small stone in a parking lot.
To prevent material like tree bark and leaves from impacting between the teeth of the infeed roller, we spaced the chisel teeth out. This spacing allows the complete down pressure of the high-tension gas springs to be focused on one chisel tooth at a time, increasing total down pressure. Additionally, this spacing allows the roller to self-clean. These rollers, along with the high-tension gas springs aggressively bite into any type of material. The advantage of this type of roller is that it aggressively grabs any size limb with or without leaves up to 8″. Long or short needle pine, as well as small, vine type material is no problem for the WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chipper. Small branches, leaves, or vines won’t wrap around the infeed roller as they would on other chippers.
The WoodMaxx MX-series wood chipper utilizes high tension gas springs. These gas springs maintain the same tension throughout the entire range of motion. This feature also slows and dampens the downward motion of the infeed roller to prevent the infeed roller from slamming downward ultimately increasing the longevity of the components. These high tension gas springs force 175 lbs. of downward pressure that allows the teeth of the infeed roller to dig into the branches and ensure a smooth entry into the chipper head.
WoodMaxx MX-series wood chippers are now equipped with a convenient tachometer/ hour meter. The tachometer allows the operator to see the actual RPM of the flywheel to ensure that the chipping head is running at the optimal recommended speed. Proper flywheel speed is important to develop the inertia required to chip hard material and evacuate the chamber effectively. The hour meter is helpful to ensure that proper maintenance intervals are kept in accordance with WoodMaxx recommendations. This all-weather meter is water proof and weather tight.
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chipper is equipped with a USA-made hydraulic infeed motor. This high quality 200cc orbital motor offers high load bearing capacity, giving it the ability to withstand thousands of hours of rotational resistance, that comes with drawing large, dense material into the infeed bin. It also offers extremely high torque for maximum pulling efficiency.
Unlike the belt-driven MX-8800 and MX-9900, the MX-8600 is a PTO direct drive-system. In other words, the shear bolt protected PTO shaft will attach directly from your tractor to the chipper flywheel rather than running through a series of belts and pulleys. This eliminates the need for replacement drive belts. Even though rotational speed is less, it is made up for in torque gained. Having higher torque allows for greater horsepower at lower rpms. Low end torque is important for better power at slower speeds making the MX-8600 more than capable of handling the proposed material size.
Safety is paramount on WoodMaxx wood chippers. Located on the top of the infeed bin, the MX-8600 utilizes an easy to activate hydrostatic auto-feed stop safety bar to disengage the Infeed roller in case of an emergency, or to clear the infeed bin if necessary. Simply pull the bar forward to increase the speed, and push it forward to decrease or reverse the in-feed speed and direction. The hydrostatic drive system is so refined that the infeed speed is fully adjustable from 0-75 ft./min.
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 PTO wood chipper is equipped with a 360 degree swivel discharge chute. With easy two finger operation, we have incorporated a convenient handle that effortlessly allows you to swivel the discharge chute 360 degrees so that you can direct the chips into a trailer or the back of a pickup truck without having to move the entire machine. Simply push down on the handle and swing the chute, when you release the handle a spring-loaded pin drops down to lock the chute into position. No tools required.
The hydrostatic pump belt tensioner is automatic on the MX-8600 wood chipper. This feature keeps consistent and correct pressure on the drive belt. If the drive belt is too tight then excessive bearing and or pump failure is likely. If it’s too loose, the belt will slip. This feature eliminates the need to adjust the belt, ensures that proper tension is achieved, and increases the longevity of the pump and bearings. It also saves you the hassle of constant adjustment.
WoodMaxx MX-series wood chippers incorporate a series of precisely located ventilation holes in the flywheel chamber. This feature creates a strong vacuum that draws air into the flywheel chamber and in combination with the fan blades on the back of the flywheel forcefully ejects the wood chips out of the chamber. This keeps the discharge chute clear, and reduces the chances of a jam. The WoodMaxx patent pending hole pattern is specifically designed to bring the air into the chamber at the optimal volume and location. Other machines have tried to copy this feature, but have not achieved the same results!
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chipper utilizes JIC (joint industrial council) hose fittings that are rated for 5000 psi. For you this means that if you ever need to replace a hydraulic hose, that your local tractor supply or auto parts store can make hoses while you wait. JIC fittings are widely used in hydraulic fluid transfer, the military, and are typically very easy to come by. No trying to chase down an adapter because of mismatched threads.
WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chippers are the perfect combination of size, weight, and features. Compact enough to easily move around, yet strong enough to get the tough jobs done. MX-series chippers are loaded with features typically found on much larger commercial machines that are much more expensive. The strength of our machines starts with using heavy formed (American standard A-36) structural steel plate, the strongest plate steel available. Each piece is laser cut, on a precision CO2 laser and meticulously welded by highly skilled American welders. WoodMaxx MX-series chipper innovative structural design includes a 1 3/4″ diameter main shaft that passes through the flywheel housing and is supported by two flange bearings. This feature, combined with the 1 3/4″ shaft, allows the flywheel to run true and adds a great deal of strength.
WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chipper comes shipped to you in in a wooden crate and is 90% completely assembled. Simply attach the MX-8600 wood chipper to your tractor, attach the infeed bin, raise the discharge chute, size and attach the PTO shaft (included), and fill the oil reservoir with 2 quarts of 10-W40 motor oil. Simply follow the user-friendly operator manual and you will be chipping in no time at all.
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chipper is equipped with four USA made, reversible dual edge knives installed. These knives are attached to the flywheel with made in USA Holo- Krome class 12.9 bolts. Four knives, and they are offset so that with every 180 degrees of rotation, the knife is taking a slightly different cut of material. The reversible knives means that you get twice the work out of one set! Designed for extreme-duty – there is no better material that can be used for superior performance and life than through our hardened, heat treated, A-8 tool steel knives. The WoodMaxx MX-8600 PTO wood chipper attachment is equipped with a comfortable table height infeed bin. This allows the user ergonomic feeding of material.
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 wood chipper offers a large 24″ x 24″ in-feed opening that funnels down to 8″x 6″ to easily accept those crooked branches.
WoodMaxx MX-series wood chipper knives can be changed easily by one person in as little as 10 minutes. The entire top of the blower housing opens like a clam shell. This allows for easy access to the flywheel and knives.
The 1-3/4″ main shaft on the MX-8600 PTO wood chipper passes through the flywheel housing and is supported by two industrial flange bearings. This feature, combined with dynamic balancing allows the flywheel to run extremely true.
550lbs of American made steel
The hydraulic hose configuration for the WoodMaxx MX-8600 requires only two streamlined hydraulic hoses. This is possible because of the hydrostatic drive system that eliminates many of the components and hoses of traditional open hydraulic systems. This feature makes future maintenance a breeze.
The WoodMaxx MX-8600 is finished with UV stable fade resistant polyester powder coating baked on at 450 degrees. Powder coating finish is thicker and more durable than ordinary paint.

Great experience from ordering through using it. Impressed with the quality of the container it arrived in. It works great on our Kubota B7500. We’ve talked about it a long time and don’t know why we waited!
I have 7 hours on this unit running behind a 1951 Ferguson TO-30. It will feed white pine as fast as you like. Maple feeds fine at a more moderate rate. I am very happy with the performance and quality of this American-made machine!
The most challenging aspect of assembly was the feed control cable, but otherwise it was very straightforward.
The hydrostatic infeed design puts this machine worlds ahead of a gravity feed unit, and the system is much better designed than the Chinese competition. Performance is on par with towed commercial rental units that typically cost $400/day.
I wish the printed manual were included, and it would be handy to have a manual tube on the machine to store the shear bolts. An accessory attachment to carry a chainsaw or loppers on the unit would be an nice addition.
I bought the MX-8600 chipper and I can say I could not be more happy. I was looking for months for the right chipper. I kept coming back to Woodmaxx for the quality and price. It arrived in an impressive crate, within about a week, so fast shipping, I took my time putting it together, I printed the instructions from the website and they were very helpful. It took me better part of a day to assemble having an extra set of hands was very helpful. The most time consuming was cutting the pto to proper length (it was too long for my set up) and we had never done that before. But we found a couple videos which helped wit hthat process. The hardest part of the assembly was the forward/reverse cable but as we used it kept doing minor adjustment till now, it works smoothly. The tech support at woodmaxx was awesome as well helping us get it right!
We have put about 8 hours on the chipper already and it worked better than expected. I am running it off my Massey Ferguson 1725 sub compact tractor. It chews up branches quickly and nicely. In addition to cleaning up branches in our yard from clean ups, we use the chips in our garden every year so this will save us so much money on buying wood chips. Tractor PTO is 24 horsepower and we have been chipping up to 4-5 inch branches with little problem ! We have filled my trailer three times now and chips are piled ready to cure and waiting for the garden next spring!
I highly recommend this chipper. from the sales people, to delivery, to assembly, to tech support to performance I give this an 11 out of 10!
I have 10 hours on my MX8600. Run it off a JD 1025R. Great combination of power and mobility. Chipper will eat 6″ logs easy. Highly recommend.
2 start-up items to watch. 1) oil filer was not tight from factory and I had a leak. Just needed to be tightended, but check all extisting and installed bolts as well. 2) check cutting pto shaft and cover. I measured correctly, but at full lift height, the cover separates and catches the edges when lowering.
I had been contemplating purchasing a wood chipper for several years, but it wasn’t until I saw the 10% off sale back in August that finally decided to pull the trigger. I had reviewed various machines from the competition, but I kept coming back to the WoodMaxx MX-8600. Previous models had a hydraulic feed mechanism which required a huge hydraulic fluid reservoir, but the new model has a hydrostatic feed mechanism which requires significantly less fluid, I found this very appealing. I also liked that it was designed and built in the USA by veterans a huge bonus. Thank you for your service!
At the time I ordered the machine, shipping was estimated to be 5-7 business days, exactly 7 days later I received notice the machine had shipped, but the Labor Day weekend caused the delivery to be delayed until the following week. I paid extra for the lift-gate service and the driver assisted me depositing the crate in my garage, my driveway is paved so this was easy.
I must state that the shipping crate was impressive, consisting of OSB plywood sheets all around with metal strapping. The plywood was even notched so that the various pieces fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, I’ve never seen so much thought put into a shipping crate. There was only minor scuffing on the panels and the machine itself was completely protected with no damage/scratches anywhere that I could see. Nice job WoodMaxx! I also repurposed the plywood to build a furniture dolly so that I can move it around when not in use. I recommend steel wheels since the machine weighs over 500lbs.
I had purchased the printed hard-copy of the user manual, and it was $10 well spent, I would highly recommend it to anyone purchasing the machine. I was not in a hurry to use the machine, so I slowly put it together over the course of two weeks. The documentation is good but not perfect, I think some of the diagrams could be larger for those of use with declining eyesight, and the section about cutting the PTO shaft is confusing, the video is much better and I recommend looking at that first. My only gripe is the OEM PTO shaft measurements should already be documented so that the only measurement required is the distance between the spines on the tractor and chipper. The PTO shaft should be a known quantity. My wife and I were able to lift the assembled chute onto the machine without too much trouble. I think the most difficult part of the assembly was locating 10w40 conventional motor oil, I went to three different auto parts stores and no one had any, everything is synthetic nowadays! I finally found some at Home Depot, of all places, go figure!
I should mention that I’m using the chipper with a Kubota BX2370 with 17hp at the PTO. I was a little apprehensive about the weight of the chipper, but my BX had no difficulty lifting it off the ground and with the front bucket attached I was able to move it around with ease. When the moment of truth finally arrived, the chipper spun up with no problems and the little RPM gauge was very useful getting the correct speed dialed in, for whatever reason my Kubota has no indication on the engine tach where the 540 rpm setting is, so I’ve always kinda winged it.
Overall, I’m very impressed, I have about three hours on the machine at this point, and I’ve yet to encounter any limbs the machine can’t handle! I’ve been mainly chipping maple, both green and dried, and I can push 4in trunks thru with ease. I’ve also managed to chip >6in logs if I cut them into 3ft lengths and then split them in half. I should mention that I don’t have a wood burning fireplace so I need to chip everything! I was not sure if I would like the angled chute but after using the machine for awhile, I found that it actually makes it easier to feed large branches since I can have one hand on the branch and the other on the speed control to make small adjustments while chipping.
I must admit, I’m hard to impress, but the clearly a lot of thought went into the design of the MX-8600, and at the end of the day it does a great job, you won’t be disappointed if you choose to purchase one for yourself! Great job WoodMaxx!
