NSK is a leading bearing and motion control manufacturing company founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1916. Today NSK has several plants around the world including England, Germany, USA and Switzerland and by far one the best quality bearings available on the market today. Although these bearings are very costly, we feel that in an application with high load and dynamic forces such as a flail mower that such high quality bearings are required. These bearings are noticeably smoother, quieter, and cooler running than any competitor and far superior to any no-name brand. Some inferior bearings contain plastic interior ball cages that are susceptible to breakage from shock loads. Poor material and tolerances generate excessive heat that translates into premature bearing failure and even belt wear as the heat travel to the pulleys and the belts. All bearings are not created equal, and this is a feature that should not be overlooked when shopping for a flail mower.
15-25 PTO horse power
3/4″ – 2.5″ Adjustable to meet various height requirements
3/16″ .1875″ Structural Q235 steel for durability.
3/16″ .1875″ Structural Q235 steel for durability.
Hammer or reversible Y-blades. Our hammer blades are 40cr, alloy structural steel. (American standard, AISI/SAE/ASTM steel no: 5140) and forged to a tapered wedge shape to avoid material buildup on the blades. Each blade weighs 1 lb. 15 oz. (cast steel is much more durable than cast iron) competitors use flat face blades. The reversible Y-blades are made from .42″ 60si2mn, spring steel, (American standard: A29m) formed, heat treated, and quenched in oil. They weigh 1 lb. 7 oz. for the set. Use the hammer blades for clearing saplings (1″ diameter or less), and the Y-blades for grasses.
18 Hammer or 36 Y-blades.
The blades are staggered precisely with no gap in the mowing area. Blade overlap is important to achieve an even cutting result.
Reverse – the rotor spins in the opposite direction as the wheels of the tractor when traveling forward. This allows the blades to shear the material as it is folded forward by the mowers. The material is then thrown up and over the rotor.
3″- Heavy duty 5/16″ wall tubing for long life.
The rotor tube is balanced to reduce vibration and ensures that the mower runs smooth, and reduces wear on the bearings.
The V-belt pulleys are heavy duty cast iron and balanced to eliminate vibration, and run smooth.
11 3/4″ swing so that the blades build required inertia.
2092 RPM
72 MPH -High speed = Efficiency to cleanly cut material
Category 1 standard 3-point or category 1 quick hitch – will attach to any category 1 3-point hitch and will also work with cat 1 quick hitch.
This feature allows for offset from center to the right of the tractor. This feature is helpful for mowing around fences, buildings; walkways exc. From the center of the PTO the mower extends 31″ to the right and 24″ to the left.
3 Total B-series USA gates “truflex” – we use only USA made gates belts on our flail mowers for long life.
A single bolt on top of the mower is utilized to replace and provide tension to the belts.
540 ONLY
Up to 25 hp. Heavy duty proven oil bath gearbox for long life.
Cast iron 540 RPM with internal over-running clutch – when the PTO shaft is disengaged the built in over running clutch allows the PTO shaft to stop turning while the gearbox and rotor shaft slow down gradually. This is an important feature, without it, the gearbox will slam to a halt when the PTO is disengaged, causing stress to the gearbox and your tractor. This feature should not be overlooked when shopping for a mower.
The skid shoes reduce gouging are bolt on so you can adjust or replace them easily when the time comes.
1-3/8″ 6 spline w/slip clutch.
Accessible greasable bearings for easy maintenance.
4.25″ With tapered ends – this roller contacts the ground to ensure even cutting height. The ends of this roller are rounded to eliminate gouging when turning corners. A scraper bar ensures that mud and debris buildup is cleaned off as you go.
The WoodMaxx FM-54 Flail Mower comes with a robust 2 year warranty. Our service department also stocks a full line of replacement parts if the need arises. View our warranty policy here.

Was pleasantly surprised of the quality of the FM-54. Came packaged securely in a heavy duty galvanized steel frame and shrink wrapped. The care that was taken to ship this was my first impression and it was good. The assembly was attaching the upright frame that attaches to the top bar on the PTO. I did nor receive an owners manual with the unit as it was being revised and a letter was on the unit thanking me for the purchase and an apology for not having it ready for this shipment and promised to send it as soon as available .I copied and pasted because mine was the same. I got the hammer blades and you can see in the picture what it was able to do. I. cut out anything larger than 2″ but the rest it mulched into small pieces, impressive. Highly recommend.

There is a website that was there with the instructions if needed. The unit is very well made and I am fully impressed with this unit. I put it on a John Deere 1025R and it works like a dream. I have no regrets in this unit and would positively reccommend it to anyone looking for a mower. I considered a bush hog, rottary and the flail. Did research and these are very popular in Europe and catching on here. Watched y-tube video comparisons and the flail was my choice. Smart purchase.
I decided to go with the woodmaxx flail mower over a brush hog and im glad i did. After having my lot cleared of trees i needed something to keep brush from taking over, and with the amount of debris left behind from the tree removal, the flail mower is definitely the right tool for the job. This thing absolutely chews trough heavy brush and is un phased by bigger pieces of branches and rocks and just spits them out the back where a brush hog would absolutely take damage.
Mower: FM-54
Machine: Kubota Bx23s
Definitely a 5-star rating. From ordering to delivery, install and mowing, it all went smoothly. the assembly and the install on the tractor were the most difficult but still easy (cutting the PTO shaft to length is always the hardest). I am using the FM54 with a Kubota BX2680 and the combo is great. The terrains I am mowing are uneven, often wet, tall grass and bushes and nothing stops this mower combo. I hit a lot of rocks unfortunately but the Y blades are still cutting pretty good after over 15h of hard mowing. The adjustment of the mower is not 100% clear on the manual and I had to start using it to understand how it pivot around the 3-point hitch, and how to set it up properly. I could not go bigger than the FM54 because of the PTO HP on the BX2680 but this size of mower works very well for me and the terrains I am dealing with. The construction seems good and so far all bolts and nuts are still attached. Time will tell if this was a good investment but so far, so good.
Do yourself a favor and switch to a flail mower. Used it ~4x now cutting grass and mulching rotten wood and leaves on 10 acres with a Kubota B-series sub compact and it’s working great. Barely ever gets bogged down even in tall grass, I could’ve gone bigger if I didn’t need it for tight spaces. Cut is pretty rough with the Y-blades but I’m not a lawn guy that needs a pristine cut. Quality is much better than attachments I’ve ordered from competitors. Seems like it’ll last at least a couple seasons before needing any work v.s. the old finish mower I was using needing something fixed every week. Note you can’t mow in reverse with this because it has a roller instead of wheels, though that’s generally not recommended for most mowers.
