NSK is a leading bearing and motion control manufacturing company founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1916. Today NSK has several plants around the world including England, Germany, USA and Switzerland and by far one the best quality bearings available on the market today. Although these bearings are very costly, we feel that in an application with high load and dynamic forces such as a flail mower that such high quality bearings are required. These bearings are noticeably smoother, quieter, and cooler running than any competitor and far superior to any no-name brand. Some inferior bearings contain plastic interior ball cages that are susceptible to breakage from shock loads. Poor material and tolerances generate excessive heat that translates into premature bearing failure and even belt wear as the heat travel to the pulleys and the belts. All bearings are not created equal, and this is a feature that should not be overlooked when shopping for a flail mower.

Duckfoot or reversible Y-blades. Our duckfoot blades are 40cr, alloy structural steel. (American standard, AISI/SAE/ASTM steel no: 5140) and forged to a tapered wedge shape to avoid material buildup on the blades. Each blade weighs 1.85 lb. (cast steel is much more durable than cast iron) competitors use flat face blades. Side by side comparison of WoodMaxx exclusive duckfoot design: The reversible Y-blades are made from .33″ 60si2mn, spring steel, (American standard: A29m) formed, heat treated, and quenched in oil and weigh 1.75 lb. each. Use the duckfoot blades for clearing saplings (1″ diameter or less), and the Y-blades for grasses.

The blades are staggered precisely with no gap in the mowing area. Blade overlap is important to achieve an even cutting result.
This allows for easy inspection, cleaning, blade changing, and maintenance of your machine. The rear gate can also be left open for easier discharge in heavy conditions, or you can close the gate to greater mulching.
The rotor spins in the opposite direction as the wheels of the tractor when traveling forward. This allows the blades to shear the material as it is folded forward by the mowers. The material is then thrown up and over the rotor.

Shifted left (36″L/43″R), shifted right (22.5″L/57″R). This feature allows for variable offset from the center to the right of the tractor. Solid state automatic – this feature automatically adjust the belt tension so you don’t have to worry about slippage or overworking the belts. This feature greatly increases the belt life.

Cast iron 540 RPM with internal over-running clutch – when the PTO shaft is disengaged the built in over running clutch allows the PTO shaft to stop turning while the gearbox and rotor shaft slow down gradually. This is an important feature, without it, the gearbox will slam to a halt when the PTO is disengaged, causing stress to the gearbox and your tractor. This feature should not be overlooked when shopping for a mower.
The skid shoes reduce gouging are bolt on so you can adjust or replace them easily when the time comes.

California Residents See Prop 65 WARNINGS
Running the FM-78H on a Kubota L3901 and love it. If you’re wondering if it’s too big it’s not handles it fine, you can feel it back there but that’s probably more due to dragging it across the ground vs a rotary mower with a wheel at the. Back. I wouldn’t recommend anything larger. Few things #1 the 78 uses less HP than my 5 foot rotary. #2 you can mow a little faster. #3 it’s more fuel efficient, save some fuel and hours. Only con is is in tall grass 4ft plus it will leave a few more leaf less stragglers than a rotary but my rotary i was using about 4ft and this thing you i was using almost the full width.
After much reviews on Flail Mowers, I chose to purchase the WoodMaxx FM-78H with Hammer blades. I cut in areas that a bush hog would not fit, but a Flail Mower would. I use it on a Kubota L4802 with a Landpride QH16. NOTE: It works with the QH16 Toplink Hook or a Versatile Quick Hitch Adapter.
I Had my doubts… They have all been put to rest. This is my first time with a flail mower. I have always use a rotary Brush Hog
type of mower. Well let me tell you this did such a nice job that it looks like I put in a par 3 golf course in my field. Wow 7 acres
of beautifully mowed yard this is very nice, and the best it has ever been cut! My neighbor wants the metal crate to make a work
bench with. This was very well packed. Now I see where the extra shipping weight comes from. 🙂 I am very happy with the

First time using a flail mower. Still need time to get used to it. I do notice that where the tires on the tractor run that the grass doesn’t get cut as well. Also haven’t figured out how to not get clumps of grass from building up on side when running. Overall the unit cuts great. Noticed some loose bolts and one grease fitting was not accessible. Swapped it out with a 90 degree fitting and no problem now
After a long period of research on several makes and models of flail mowers, I decided to purchase the WoodMaxx FM-78H with Y blades. Honestly, I was a bit concerned that this model is made in China, but after reading many reviews the concern was settled. The fact that WoodMaxx is a veteran owned company was also a major consideration.
Dealing with WoodMaxx is easy once you understand that they do most of their communication by email. I had to wait several weeks to order as my desired model was not in stock. Once restocked I was promptly notified and completed my order online. My order was delivered by Old Dominion at the time and date arranged. The order arrived well packaged in a steel cage, surrounded by shrink wrap, in pristine condition. I also took the time to read and understand all the instruction and manuals provided. I added the necessary gear oil to the gear box and checked the unit over for loose bolts and hardware. I measured and cut the PTO shaft to match my tractor setup. I loosened and slipped the clutch and adjusted it back correctly.
The only hiccup in the process was that my 4th and 5th remotes are above my fender wells and the hydraulic lines provided were about 2 feet short of the needed length. I purchased a couple of extension hoses from a local shop.
Once everything came together, I was able put to the FM-78H to work. I have a John Deere 4044R with a pto hp of 32.5, which is on the low end of what the FM-78H is rated. I found that I have plenty of power to operate the unit. The unit does a great job of chopping up thick grass.
I have had the unit a little over a month and have only had the opportunity to operate it one day for a period of 5 hours. It performed well. The looks and seems to be well made with thick steel ends, door, and lifting brackets. At 804 lbs, I consider it heavy duty for the size of my compact tractor. With proper operation and maintenance, I expect to get many years of trouble-free service from this unit.
